The Pfandbrief Act (PfandBG) of 2005, last amended by the Law on the Onward Development of Pfandbrief Legislation of March 2009, sets forth the provisions governing the issuance and collateralization of Pfandbriefe.

The Law on the Onward Development of Pfandbrief Legislation was promulgated on March 25, 2009 in Federal Law Gazette I, pp 607 – 629.

On February 17, 2005, the German Bundestag (Lower House) passed the Pfandbrief Act with the modifications which the Finance Committee of the Bundestag had resolved.
